Dyes are produced from the ground innards of vast quantities of insects. They have absolutely no magical effect, and are only obtained for their color and beauty. Because of their impracticality, they are also a symbol of wealth and luxury. Standard clothing is almost always gray or brown, which have hence become colors that have fallen out of favor.
